Digital is a vary broad term covering three basic types of image capturing devices.
Digital Radiography or DR is a flat plate device used to directly capture the Radiation produced images. This technology is the fastest system to acquire viewable images. This is also the most expensive system.
Computed Radiography or CR is a indirect system converting X-rays to light, similar to the conventional wet film system used before digital. The 'screen' is read and converted to digital images.
Charged-Coupled Device or CCD is a multi process system that captures images on an illuminating plate which a digital camera takes a picture of than is sent to a software program for manipulation and storage. This system is good for single application and is less expensive than DR systems.
